CropWeek 2010 - Is There Any Incentive To Plant Wheat?

by

It is no secret that durum prices are less than fantastic.  Spring wheat is currently in somewhat of a better position but has its own issues on the supply side.  Many farmers at CropWeek were really wondering how much durum they would plant this coming spring with the glut that is preventing any probability of higher prices in the next six months.  With the lack of movement of last years crop, farmers are not very eager to plant more in 2010.

Overall, it seems that farmers are going to plant wheat but it is not a forgone conclusion.  There was a lot of hallway discussion that with barley and durum outlooks being poor, spring wheat may become the cereal of choice by default in 2010.

I talked to Bruce Burnett, Weather and Market Analyst from the Canadian Wheat Board about his new durum and spring wheat outlook for 2010.  See Past Wheat Board content

What is the plan on your farm?  Are you thinking about planting the same, less or more acres of spring wheat?  Will you be substituting durum for lentil acres this year?  What cereal are you going to plant this year with the lack of enthusiasm in the cereal price markets?  Let us know in the comment section.
