CropWeek 2010 - Todd Hyra - Midge Tolerant Wheat Becomes Reality

by

Wheat midge has great impact on wheat growers in many areas.  This year will  be the first year that farmers will be able to purchase midge tolerant varieties.  There are three different varieties right now and more in the pipeline.  It is critical that as an industry we properly manage this great new innovation in wheat breeding.  Wheat midge can cause great damage in wheat fields and it is our responsibilities as agriculturalists to manage this SM1 gene properly.

I talked to Todd Hyra from Secan about why stewardship is so important for these vareties and why stewardship on the SM1 gene is so important.  Todd does a great job in the video of explaining why you can only use farm saved seed for one year and that you must abide by the guidelines in the stewardship plan.
