Tiffin 2010 - The Canadian Cattle Industry is Still Searching For Change

by

I am finding more and more ranchers and feeders are struggling to find the answers to their short term profitability issues.  I just hope that if ALMA has success there is enough people in the industry still to benefit from the hard work.   At the Tiffin conference I really detected frustration from producers on how the industry is going to right the ship.  I love the passion for livestock that ranchers and feeders have and it is so sad that the financial pressure is beginning to crack some of the spirit.  The Canadian cattle industry has had its moments of turmoil since 2003 and many ranchers and feeders want and need the change we have been talking about for so long to come to fruition in the short term.  In Canada, we have several bodies working on change.  We have the Canadian Cattlemans Association, the National Cattle Feeders, the Alberta Livestock Meat Agency and other subsidiary bodies trying to bring the industry back to sustainability.

Gordon Cove is the CEO of the Alberta Livestock Meat Agency  (ALMA) and he is focused on developing the Alberta meat sector.  I have interviewed Gordon in the past so this time I asked him about some of the opportunities that are in the beef sector.  Whether you agree with  the concept of ALMA or not, Gordon and his team are working diligently to be  a catalyst for change in the industry.  In this interview, Gordon discussed market access, genomics and domestic growth.  All three of these  are very important to ranchers and feeders for the long term health of the industry.
