Corn Left Standing in the Snow

by

I was in Ontario this week and while driving between Palmerston and London I noticed very quickly the corn that has been left in the field over the winter. I am not sure how many acres are still out there but there were several fields along the highway that looked very much like the picture above and the video below.

My visual perception was that the corn looked okay.  Many of the fields that I saw appeared to be standing quite well in comparison to some of the stories I have heard. Although you should consider that I did not get off the highway very far to see more fields.

There are many acres in the United States also standing in the snow and the speculation continues as to how much of it will actually get harvested in the spring.  Add this issue to the questions around the quality of some corn piles in the US and the reliability of the USDA reports and you have a corn traders dream.

For the sake of the farmers with corn still in the field, I hope that it gets harvested and is salvageable for sale.  One thing that I heard from several farmers in Ontario was that this this is why buying a variety with good stand-ability is so important.
