The weather in the US in the first two months of the year has led to some higher fat cattle prices. This has initiated a little optimism for the fat cattle board in 2010. What is unclear is whether or not this momentum will continue or die off like the Beta tape. One thing that is stirring in the producers favor is the reality of a tightening supply. I had a feedlot producer comment last night that he feels fat cattle have the potential to move aggressively higher in late 2010 if heifer placements drop off to expand the cow herd. His final comment was that this fat cattle market feels like wheat in 2007 when it shot to all time highs based on supply constraints.
At the Gateway Livestock Exchange customer night I was fortunate enough to once again talk to Duane Lenz of Cattlefax about what he thinks about the early fed cattle results of 2010.
See my interview with Duane Lenz at the NCBA 2010 convention back in January 2010.
