Has the Cold Wet Weather Affected the Emerged Spring Crops?

by

Have you ever heard the phrase the early bird gets the worm?  This year the early bird may have reseed….or maybe not.  It is probably to early to tell until the weather warms up but it is hard to be that patient.  For areas of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta that have been seeded the crops came out of the ground fast and looked great.  Then came the second winter which has included snow, rain, wind and more snow.

There is a whole list of questions that growers are asking right now:

  • Will my spring seeded crop survive?
  • Will I need to re-seed?
  • Can I expect yield loss?

Ross Mckenzie, Agronomy Research Scientist, Lethbridge Research Station talked to me about how concerned farmers in the west need to be about the cold wet weather and their emerged spring crops by answering the above questions and more.
