Ontario Corn Update - Doug Alderman, Pride Seeds

With many farmers planting corn much earlier than they traditionally have and with warm weather the past two weeks, the corn crop crop in Ontario is looking quite promising. It actually is one of the good stories in Canadian farming this year along with most of the winter cereals across the country. Many people have been commenting to me that the corn is chest high in some areas and beginning to tassel which is much better than “knee high by July”.

As is the case most times in agriculture, you are never okay to sleep easy at night until the crop is in the bin. With threats of above average temperatures and the possibility of drought the corn crop is not out of the woods yet.

I had a chance this week to chat with Doug Alderman from Pride Seeds about what the Ontario crop and what farmers need to be considering heading into the rest of the growing season.
