The Adversity of 2010 Continues For Farmers in the West

by

wet swaths in alberta

By Shaun Haney

Its official the harvest of 2010 that we feared appears to be here. Even though David Phillips may of thought we would be free of frost, it is cold and wet.  Is a hard frost next?  The low hanging fruit of harvesting the early seeded crops is gone and now farmers across the west must deal with the harsh reality of a long slow harvest.

Many questions are really unanswered in terms of the harvest ahead of us. Will we be able to harvest spring wheat with any quality or will feed wheat flood the market? Will areas of Alberta have the high yields that are being forecasted? Will the cereal and canola seed fields be able to maintain germination in order to supply the market next spring? And guess what there is many more questions on top of these which is creating one of the most answered falls in recent memory.

Please check out my VLOG below on this very topic. It was filmed in my pickup truck in the middle of a rainstorm. What gets any better than that?
