Last year in Ontario the weather provided an almost perfect spring and summer season. I heard many Ontario corn farmers say that, “this is the earliest that I have ever seeded corn.” Many wondered at the time what would be the results and if the crop would get hammered by a spring frost.
Early seeding seems to becoming a must to get the upper hand in producing higher yields on the farm. Many growers are seeding early thinking that the frost risk is minimal but the opportunity for yield is high. At the Southwest Agricultural Conference I talked to Pat Lynch about the largest on farm seeding experiment in Ontario history. Pat talks about how last year Ontario farmers proved that seeding your corn early provides the opportunity for record yields.
