Canola School - Pests You Should be Concerned About - Dr. Lloyd Dosdall

by

With the wet weather across the prairies getting all the media attention, you would assume that most farmers would be dealing with pests that come with an over abundance of moisture. With the majority of the west being wet except for the Peace, pests that love moisture will become a real problem.  The interesting thing is that depending on whether you are in the Peace Region, Saskatchewan, Southern and Central Alberta or Manitoba the pests you need to be concerned about in 2011 are varied.

Scouting and field monitoring will be extra important this year as the later than usual seeding will result in good feeding weather for bugs coinciding with very vulnerable plants at the seedling stage. Field perimeters and any volunteer crops close to the edge should be looked at closely now for activity as some bugs are emerging to feed. As the season progresses, that vigilance should be continued to ensure no late outbreaks can occur.

Dr. Lloyd Dosdall is an entomologist and professor at the University of Alberta. In this episode of the Canola School, we get an overview of the pests farmers should be on the lookout for across the west.
