The Impact of Unseeded Acres on Special Crops - Bobby Leavins - Rayglen Commodities

by

This spring, farmers in hard hit areas had to narrow their focus when it came to getting a crop in. Traditional, high value crops like wheat and canola got pushed to the front of the line when seeding decisions were made. That decision left a lot of the special crops seeded late or left unseeded as conditions worsened in some areas and the seeding window closed. The real impact on special crops has yet to be seen and until September, yields are anyones guess.

Bobby Leavins is the Operations Manager of Rayglen Commodities in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This year, large areas of Saskatchewan were seeded late or went completely unseeded. I asked Bobby the following questions:

-Is there more potential upside or downside in special crops this year?
-Do you think there will be enough supply in the market to meet the demand?
-What is the situation with off-grade lentil stocks?
-What does the yield potential look like for the special crops that did get seeded?
-Is there the same amount of optimism around special crops in Saskatchewan as there was last year?
-If the CWB single desk disappears, will it hurt special crops in Saskatchewan?
