Canola School: Crop Conditions Across the Prairies - Jim Bessel, Canola Council of Canada

by

The start of the 2011 growing season was challenging to say the least. Wet weather and unseasonably cool conditions in the majority of the west had producers stressed out and wondering if they would get a crop in at all. That was the case in fact in large areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Fast forward a few months and wet conditions are still a factor in some areas, heat stress and disease in others and other regions in the province are doing exceptionally well. While at the same time areas i the PEace region started out very dry but have had ample levels of rain fall in crop.

In this episode of the Canola School, we get an overview of conditions across the west from someone well qualified to provide it. Jim Bessel is a Senior Agronomy Specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. I spoke with him at Canola Council combine clinic in Westlock, Alberta about the overall state of the canola crop, some of the pest and disease issues being faced and some of the problems continued moisture have caused.
