Anyone who grows malt barley knows the number of specifications it has to meet in order to be acceptable. There are some years where those specifications can prove very frustrating to growers. When that barley doesn’t meet specifications, one of the areas that gets the blame is variety, the grain company or the CWB. After a bad year with any crop it’s common to hear ” I’ll never grow _______ again!” Sometimes that blame is legitimate, and sometimes it’s not. With malt barley, there’s not a lot of options out there. To find out exactly why that is, we talked to an expert in that field. Erin Armstrong is Director of Research and Product Development for Canterra Seeds about the reasons for varieties like Metcalfe and Harrington hang around so long.
