Under the Microscope: Dealing with Triffid Flax Two Years Later

by

When CDC Triffid flax was discovered in export shipments to Europe in 2009, the result was devastating to Canadian producers and shippers.  Canada’s flax industry exports to the EU were suspended and even after strict testing policies came into place, are still not at pre 2009 levels.  At the time the news broke, the industry was really reeling and struggling to find answers to the future of flax production in Canada.  Farmers and the industry had questions, anger and at times a feeling of hopelessness in the face of the EU turing back ships.

Those testing policies and practices are still in place today. The test for triffid is a complex genetic test that is the only method that can be utilized to effectively determine the presence of the GMO triffid.

In this episode of Under the Microscope, Holly Gelech of BioVision Seed Labs explains the complex test for triffid, and why there is a continued need for testing still today even though the issue has been contained.
