The issue of herbicide resistance is a problem not fully realized, but it will get bigger, its just a matter of when. The amount of glyphosate and other similar products in use on tolerant crops right now coupled with the profitability of those crops means rotations will be pushed, giving more weeds exposed a greater amount of time to develop resistance. In reality this is a natural reaction from nature.
With nothing new in the works at least for a while, one of the interim solutions brought to the table is the use of older “resistance proof” products in a weed control strategy. The other solution is developing multiple resistance traits in crops
I spoke with AAFC Research Scientist Dr Hugh Beckie about the problem of resistance and those strategies used to fight it at the 2011 Farm Forum Event in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
