This years NCBA conference saw a more positive outlook from producers and industry members than there has been for a while. That outlook comes with some qualifiers as well as some questions that have to be answered as we look ahead to the rest of 2012. I spoke to Duane Lenz of CattleFax about the current market situation and asked a number of questions.
– Will prices hold? Will the market support expensive beef and are we competitive from that standpoint?
– Will feeder cattle prices go higher? Will the tight supply that brought us here, tighten further because of drought carryover problems?
– Given the 60 year low in the size of the cattle herd, how do we grow?
– With the amount of risk in the market, will lenders continue to provide financing for producers?
