RealWeatherwatch: Western Canada Farmers at the Mercy of El Nino

by

It wasn’t that long ago that I was complaining to everyone who would listen about how sick I was of writing about the wet weather and flooding. No doubt, not as sick as producers were of working in it, but that was a pretty depressing stretch for all involved. Let’s hope drought isn’t the next big story. For a great portion of the West, it’s been very dry this winter. That dryness has come with some pretty great temperatures, but the lack of moisture has some producers pretty concerned.

The reason for this dry pattern and the mild winter weather appears to be a good old fashioned El Nino. So what kind weather can we expect to see come spring? Will we get the timely rains we need or will this dry pattern continue? Will above average temperatures this winter mean above average temperatures this spring and summer?

I brought those questions to Meteorologist Art Douglas when I interviewed him at the Alberta Beef Industry Conference in Red Deer, Alberta.
