Tiffin 2012 - Are We Moving Backwards In Feed Efficiency In Cattle?

by

The cattle feeder is in the business of managing cattle feed intake and feed efficiency. It’s a make or break venture that operates on getting cattle to convert feed to mass as quickly and efficiently as possible. It’s a process that in recent years has had some tight margins associated with it, making feed efficiency all the more critical. Needless to say, it is the key aspect in any feed yard operation and paramount in most operators minds.

So when someone comes along and says that we’re going backward in terms of feed efficiency in cattle, it turns some heads. That’s exactly what Dr John Basarab and his colleagues are saying with regards to feed efficiency in cattle.   Dr. Basarab feels that there are great strides to be made in that area , primarily in the space of genetics.

I asked Dr. Basarab about his research when I spoke to him at this year’s Tiffin Conference in Lethbridge, Alberta.
