Jason Casselman, agronomist with Dunvegan AG Solutions Inc., near Rycroft, Alta., recently sent in these images of crop progress in the Peace region. After a very dry year in 2011, the area did get decent snow cover leading to better spring seeding conditions than last year. Timely rain this weekend (about an inch and a half to two inches) has helped improve soil moisture conditions, though the LaCrete area is drier, he says. Overall though the Peace region is off to a good start and has the potential for some good crops if timely rains are provided through the season.
Jason says that peas are about 95% seeded and are in good shape. The recent moisture and heat should get them out of the ground quickly. Wheat is about 80% seeded across the Peace, and a few of the early-seeded fields are already emerged. Canola is about 70% seeded and should be emerging this week with favorable weather.
If you have any photos or video from your farm this summer we would love to post them to show all our readers and viewers how the crops are progressing.
