Swinging Soybean Acres Will Come From Winter Wheat in Ontario

by

As soybean planting begins there is a lot discussion about the potential for some acres swinging into soybeans.  Peter Gredig and I had a great discussion on it this morning over the phone.

Peter indicated to me that from his discussions with retailers and other farmers most of the swing into soybeans will be from winter wheat that was ripped out due to winter kill.  This would be in conflict with the notion some farmers would swing to more soybeans from corn due to high soybean profitability and corn seed supply issues.

For the guys that were more optimistic in the spring and put down 120 lbs of nitrogen they will be forced to swing to corn.  Unfortunately the corn hybrid they get will not be their first choice either.
