Graphic of US Drought Footprints Back to 1896

by

The US drought is causing much concern for farmers and the impending impact on food prices in the next 12 months.  It can be difficult to sometimes get a handle on how bad this year is in comparison.  Its always easy to say, “this is bad but nothing like 88 or 34.”  Sometimes a graphic is the best way to communicate the message.

The NY Times has provided a great graphical representation of the droughts footprint going to 1896.

Amazingly, the US drought of 2012 is one of the worst according to the amount of orange on the chart.
