Fall Weed Control Strategies In Dry Conditions

by

It’s the beginning of October and it has been dry, dry, dry for many parts of the Prairies. Winter wheat is struggling to germinate and there have been several devastating grass fires over the last month in Alberta and Manitoba. While there have been frosts, above normal daytime temps even just a week ago set records in Manitoba.

The dry conditions haven’t been conducive to weed growth, which is a good thing, but fall is the best time to take out perennials and winter annuals. But when there is very little germinating, is it worth it? What about frost?

We spoke with Brunel Sabourin, area agronomist with Cargill about fall weed control strategies in a dry fall. He highlights why the spray window may very well be open for a few weeks yet (and today’s snowfall in Manitoba could make that a very real possibility if we return to warmer weather again).
