Better timing of manure application with in-crop needs was the motivation behind developing a new low disturbance, shallow injection manure application toolbar. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (OMAFRA), along with industry partners, developed the multi-coultered toolbar to try and find a made-in-Canada solution for in-crop manure applications for not just pastures but row crops as well.
Christine Brown, cover crop specialist with OMAFRA, took us on a tour of the toolbar at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show held last month. Not only are they looking at which coulters do the best job, they’re also measuring ammonia losses, to see which set up minimizes losses and crop damage. Brown says that the application system is being tested with both liquid and straw based manure systems, as well as being compared with existing European models to come up with the best fit for Canadian farms.
