Plant Talk — How and Why Plants Communicate

by

It sounds a little out there — plants talking to each other, warning them to arm themselves against predators and biotic stress, but it’s real. The research into plant communication is actually decades old, but for some time it was largely ignored by the research community. That is, until now.

Rob Saik, president of the Agri-Trend Group of Companies, spoke with Dr. Jack Schultz at November’s Farm Forum Event held at Saskatoon, Sask. Understanding first how plants speak to each other was the easy part, now it’s up to researchers to figure out how agriculture can make the most of it. In this interview, Dr. Schultz talks about how and why plants speak with each other and the first applications of this knowledge of the secret life of plants.
