Getting a Handle on Soil Nutrient-Supplying Power

by

A soil test is an excellent starting point for any fertility plan, but interpreting the results can leave some people scratching their heads. There are several strategies to soil sampling itself — analysis and recommendation strategies vary as well. One Saskatchewan company takes a somewhat different approach to testing and recommendations, using made-in-Saskatchewan technology.

In this video filmed at Brandon’s Ag Days in mid-January, Edgar Hammermeister, field services manager for Western Ag Labs, walks us through the unique process his company uses to provide fertility management advice for its clients. The soil test looks at the potential extraction levels of certain nutrients, as opposed to the overall level of nutrients, and the software that accompanies the soil test incorporates soil pH, expected rainfall, crop prices and more into the fertility decision making tool.
