Hold off on N, but Get Clover on Now — Early Spring Wheat Update with Peter Johnson

by

As the snow finally disappears and the wheat crop starts to green up, now is the time to add clover, not nitrogen fertilizer to the crop, says Peter Johnson, cereal specialist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. It’s a little early to talk winter wheat conditions (though so far so good), but Johnson does certainly have some early-season tips for winter wheat management.

Farmers should be taking advantage of the crisp mornings and firm fields to spread clover right now, he says. Not sure which type of clover to choose? In this video, Johnson explains the two main types, covers the recommended seeding rates and the overwhelming evidence to support the application of this nitrogen-fixing crop. Johnson also explains two different nitrogen application strategies for winter wheat and the potential for losses and risk management of each.
