Golden Horseshoe Crop Update to May 15

by

The most advanced winter wheat is at the flag leaf stage and roughly 85% of the corn crop is planted, according to the latest crop update from the Golden Horseshoe Soil & Crop Improvement Association. Winter wheat weed control applications should be made prior to the flag leaf stage, Peter Johnson, cereal specialist, says. Pasture and hay land is progressing well and first cut will start soon. Growing degree day accumulation is close to average, but well behind last year (an exceptional year, it should be noted).

Soybean planting has begun and is progressing well. It is not yet late at all, Horst Bohner, Ontario soybean specialist, reminds growers, so switching to a shorter season variety at this point is premature and limits yield potential. Instead, he says to avoid planting soybeans too deep where the soil is cooler in order for the crop to germinate and emerge quickly.
