Wheat Disease Control Strategies: Moving from Flag Leaf Timing to Heading Timing

by

Protecting the almighty flag leaf of a wheat crop is paramount, as this single, fat leaf contributes the vast majority of energy to fill those kernels. Timing a fungicide application to protect against leaf diseases like tan spot or septoria must happen before heads emerge to really benefit the crop. Of course, as heads start popping through, it’s also time to switch gears quickly and get out there with a product designed to protect against fusarium head blight.

In this video, Rob Miller, technical development manager with BASF, explains why the flag leaf is so pivotal to yield and how to protect it. He also walks through how to properly time a fungicide spray targeting fusarium head blight — as there are always questions about which heads to count, how emerged they must be, and when it really is too late to spray heads.
