With the corn crop off to a good start, now is a great time to assess root establishment, check for compaction layers and get a handle on seed placement.
In this video, Mark Van Veen of Salford Machinery, walks us through two soil pits — one that shows us what excellent corn root development looks like and how the right finishing tillage tool in good conditions can really prepare a great seed bed, and another pit, not too far away that shows us exactly why you should work ground when it’s too wet. Van Veen also runs through some options on what could have been done differently, and what tillage pass may be put on the To-Do list for the fall or next spring.
