Beef Research School - Managing Biosecurity with Beef Cattle

by

Biosecurity is one of those terms that brings to mind people in hazmat suits and areas roped off with red tape and biohazard signs. The simple truth about the term biosecurity is that it consists of a lot of things that producers already do on the farm. Biosecurity is everything producers do to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious disease on their farms. It’s a simple concept with a easily understood goal, but the strategy behind how you get there has to be tailor made to suit your operation.

In this episode of the Beef Research School we talk to Dr John Campbell of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon and cow-calf producer Dave Zehnder from Invermere, British Columbia. We discuss what biosecurity means on the feedlot and the pasture, what producers need to be cautious of and why a biosecurity strategy in beef cattle is less cut & dried than it is with other livestock.
