Beef Science Cluster Recieves $14 million in Government Support

by

Minister of Agriculture, Gerry Ritz, was on hand at Airdrie Alta., yesterday to announce news of $14 million in funding for the Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster under Growing Forward 2. The Agriculture and Agri-Food (AAFC) funding supports strategic research that will drive the efficiencies that enable producers to realize continuous improvements, while enhancing overall sector sustainability.

“Raising more beef using fewer resources is the mantra of today’s beef producer,” says Canadian Cattlemen’s Association president Martin Unrau. “Research, particularly into feed efficiencies and environmental sustainability, helps producers produce more beef from fewer animals while maximizing resources like land and water.”

The Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster is managed by the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), a division of CCA. Industry will also contribute to the Cluster, with $5 million largely from the BCRC’s National Check-off research allocation, as well as direct investments from provincial beef industry groups. Provincial governments will also contribute approximately $1 million to this Cluster, bringing the total investment to $20 million. Research in this Cluster is focussed on beef quality and safety, animal health and welfare, feed production, and environmental sustainability. The research activities will be carried out through collaborative arrangements between academia, government and industry.
