Those farmers involved in forage seed production are likely quite familiar with a wick weeder — a unit that uses chemical-soaked rope to deliver herbicide to weeds towering above the crop. But, increasingly, wick weeders are being used in more conventional operations as well in pulse crops, where herbicide options are sometimes limited, and even row crop applications.
As you’ll see in the video below, getting reacquainted with the wick weeder could open up some late-season weed control opportunities that farmers may not think of first thing. Shaun Haney and Debra Murphy spoke with Ralph Wasylyniuk, of Farm Agro Sales, at Canada’s Farm Progress Show back in June. Wasylyniuk walks them through how the wick weeder works, why you don’t have to agonize over cleanout, crop safety and the many applications of the unit.
