How Social Media is Extending Extension

Just a few years ago, Dave Hooker, professor at University of Guelph-Ridgetown Campus, started a Twitter account as @CropDoc2. Like many, however, it sort of was just there and he didn’t do much with it. Then, at the urging of a colleague, Hooker started Tweeting, asking questions, pushing out research findings and started a true conversation โ€” a key difference with social media. The impact on his work and how he does his job has fundamentally changed because of it.

There are many that still question the value of social media, but scads more who can recognize its role, but aren’t sure exactly how to interact on things like Twitter. In this interview between Bern Tobin, RealAgriculture’s Ontario field editor, and Dave Hooker, hear how Twitter is shaping research, information transfer and, yes, creating new friendships and relationships, too. Some of the side-effects of being on Twitter may surprise you.
