Why Farming & Food Production Should be Taught in School: The 2013 CYSA Winning Speeches

by

This past week not only marked the running of the Royal, formerly the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair, but also the Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture competition in Toronto, Ont. Each year, bright young minds in two categories, junior and senior, gather together to give a five to seven minute speech on a given topic. Just like last year’s winners, this year’s champions, Courtney Jordan, from Beausejour, Man., and Madison Dyment, of Burgessville, Ont., are articulate and passionate about agriculture.

Of interest this year, both the junior and senior winning speeches focus on the same topic: the importance of agriculture being included in the public school curriculum. The examples, discussion and reasons these bright young women offer up for their argument will likely have you nodding right along, especially if you’ve ever been frustrated by consumers general lack of knowledge as to where their food comes from.

Below are the winning speeches by the senior winner, Courtney Jordan, and junior winner, Madison Dyment.

Congratulations to both winners and the organizers of this event.
