Ruminating with RealAg, Ep. 2 — Conference Highlights, Hay Shortages & the Beef Straw Man Initiative

by

It’s calving season. You waited – we’ve delivered! Our second podcast is up and available for download!

This podcast features an interview with Travis Peardon, a livestock specalist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, about how last year’s harsh winter is still affecting ranch management.

The rest of the podcast is a blur of activity, just as the last few months have been a blur for many cattle producers, with regional and provincial board meetings, cattle shows, rodeos and conferences. We cover a few stories from some of these events, including a highlight of our Talking to Cattle Fitters interview at Canadian Western Agribition and a discussion with Rachel Wheeler, a cattle buyer all the way from T&R Genetics in Australia, at Farmfair International about the impressive international presence and what keeps bringing her back for more Canadian genetics.

At the end of November, RealAgriculture.com’s founder, Shaun Haney, attended both the Beef Straw Man conference and the Canfax Market Forum in Calgary (you can see all of the Canfax Market Forum coverage here). In attending the Beef Straw Man, Shaun was able to track down David Andrews to better understand the relatively new initiative. Since then, the three “straw men” have published their recommendations report. In this podcast, we’ve included Shaun’s intro to the Beef Straw Man and an interview with Kim McConnell about the recommendations report.

I’ll leave it up to you to hear the rest. It’s a learning process, this podcasting. If you have any suggestions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Here’s hoping you enjoy a voice other than Travis Tritt in your tractor with you.
