Why GMOs are Green, Sustainable and Necessary — Mark Lynas

Biotechnology’s fatal flaw, says Mark Lynas, was that the first well-know trait associated with the technology was herbicide resistance. First impressions matter, and on that account, genetic modification and the resulting GMOs failed miserably. Lynas, a UK-based environmentalist and former anti-biotech activist, says that GMOs’ bad publicity needs to move past this tough start and move on to the possibility of what is and what’s to come, as biotechnology provides very real value in sustainable food production going forward.

Providing the keynote address at this year’s CropConnect conference in Winnipeg, Man., Lynas joined Real Agriculture editor Lyndsey Smith for a discussion on his thoughts as to why GMOs are really sustainable, how the reality of farming needs to be understood and the world-wide potential for biotechnology.

I am not against big Corp. or big Ag. but in producing food one should strive for high Brix and high density.
This can not be accomplished with high use of chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides) for the soil microbes are killed by them. By quantity a person can fill the stomach but lack food quality which results in lack of good health as Canola verses Butter. Yes Richard, but the problem is that the organic industry – which is the self-appointed alternative to modern biotech farming – does not measure sugar content (Brix) or nutrient content.
Nor for that matter does the organic industry bother to test to ensure prohibited substances like synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides, are not being used on organic farms.
Finally, and most disturbing, the organic industry does not bother to test for fecal coliforms resulting from improperly-composted manure.

If a person consumes food that is not nutrituos these days its because they choose to, not because the farmer is producing it.

not so, lots of us do it because it is cheaper. Sad to say healthy food is only a privileged for the rich these days. Poorer families fill up on KD hot dogs and cheap white bread. So sad.
