Pulse School: Testing Seed For Nasty Diseases — An Affordable Management Strategy

by

Let’s say the planning stages go like this: crop rotation, variety selection, seed testing, determine seeding rate and so on. If you’re a farmer who doesn’t typically test seed or who may be thinking of skipping this step in an effort to save on costs, this episode of the Pulse School is for you.

In this interview, RealAgriculture editor Lyndsey Smith is joined by Holly Gelech, of Biovision Seed Labs, to talk pulses, pulse seed and the nasty disease lurking in and on seed. Turns out, that seed testing is not just a relatively low-cost tool to help you develop an accurate seeding rate based on 1,000 kernel weight, germination and vigour, it’s also an excellent insurance plan against introducing a harmful disease to a field or increasing the inoculum levels.

If you haven’t sent your seed sample in yet, there’s still plenty of time to determine if the seed you have needs a seed treatment, or whether or not a seed treatment is enough to protect the seedlings from each of the disease discussed in this Pulse School episode.
