This Week on RealAg — The February 14th Edition

by

Bad news out of Manitoba this morning, as the first suspected case of porcine epidemic diarrhea is awaiting confirmation from the disease lab here in Winnipeg. The Chief Vet’s office has already confirmed the infection at a wean to finish operation in hog-heavy southeastern Manitoba, but until the lab confirms it it’s still only suspected. The virus, devastating to hog herds and especially lethal to piglets, has been confirmed on over 10 farms in Ontario, with new confirmed infections almost daily. Farmers are urged to review biosecurity protocols and alert their vets if a case of PEDv is even suspected. (Please do this!)

In other Debbie Downer news, I planned to cover the National Farm Machinery Show in Louisville, Kentucky, this week, only to be waylaid by a nasty winter storm that prevented air travel out of Winnipeg for the day…and then the next. Never fear, however, as our Ontario field editor Bernard Tobin made it there safe and sound and spent two long days capturing the newest and neatest machinery stuff for 2014. His first video about the much-discussed John Deere ExactEmerge high speed planter is up on the site already. Watch that here, and keep an eye out for several more videos in the coming weeks.

But let’s turn this depressing column around! And talk about beautiful things…like Debra Murphy’s new feature on the site — Depth of Field. This photo essay feature goes big on beauty images and light on words, which may be a welcome change for some of you (and me). The very first feature lays out the two weeks Debra spent in Australia last September as part of the Five Nations Beef Alliance. Take a look at them here.

And, in other fantastic news, Tom Wolf, better known as @Nozzle_Guy on Twitter and as Canada’s spray application specialist, will headline a new series on RealAgriculture called Spray Tips (#spraytips). Spray Tips will be a video log format featuring Tom and giant white board where each episode he’ll tackle a farmer’s question, plus offer some timely insight into another topic of choice. Questions from the audience are encouraged, so be sure to Tweet Tom (or you can seen me an email at [email protected]). Watch the site for the first episode going up sometime later today…or by Tuesday. We run a tight ship here, let me tell you.

Until next week, my RealAggies,

—Lyndsey (@RealAg_Lyndsey)
