In the Dirt: Assessing Early Spring Soil Conditions & Devising a Plan of Attack

by

Early spring winter wheat ontarioAs the snow slowly recedes and farmers are itching to get the clover on (but not N yet, please!), now is a great time of year to make assessments on the condition the seedbed left by fall field work. You can learn a lot taking the time now to tour your fields, eye up some not so great conditions and not only put a plan in place for spring priorities, but also work to prevent some of the most common primary tillage mistakes.

In this very unique In the Dirt episode, Bernard Tobin takes an early spring field tour with Jim Boak, of Salford. Boak talks us through (and shows great examples) of several different fields, all with significant spring seedbed prep challenges ahead. From the tell-tale signs of an uneven implement at work, to a filed that was cultivated far too wet, and on to risks of erosion and how to manage giant root balls left from last year, Boak offers insight on what went wrong and what implement may be necessary this spring to get the fields set right.
