Shaun Haney talks to Kevin Grier from the George Morris Center about the demand challenges for retail beef in 2014. Kevin has been doing some interesting research on how much beef is featured in grocery store fliers and he is not liking the trend. One of the big indications for beef demand is always the May long weekend and it is fast approaching. Get those BBQ’s fired up.
Kevin mentions this is not a question at all of whether consumers are willing to support farmers, instead it is a question of what is going to be your protein of choice in 2014. The rise in pork prices will definitely help meat sales at the grocery counter.

With retail beef prices being relatively high, ranchers and feeders need consumers to buck up and keep the demand train rolling. If they will do that is a big question heading into spring.
