AWC Invests $1.5 Million Across 10 Research Projects

by

The Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC) announced today its plans of investing $1.5 million across ten agronomic and breeding/genetic research projects. This funding commitment is part of the Agriculture Funding Consortium (AFC), a group of 14 funding organizations that have partnered to collaborate on agriculture research funding.

Kent Erickson, chair of AWC’s board of directors, says that 40% of collected check-off dollars are allocated to research with the goal of investing in projects that are targeted at genetic and agronomic improvements to advance the wheat industry.

The total investment for all ten projects is $9 million and includes funding targeted at national, provincial and university institutions. Five of the announced projects are focused on breeding and/or genetics, four are in the area of agronomic management and one covers both agronomy and genetics.

To leverage research dollars, AWC partnered with several of AFC members on these projects, including the Western Grains Research Foundation, Alberta Innovates BioSolutions, Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund, Alberta Pulse Growers Commission, Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola Producers Commission, Potato Growers of Alberta and the Alfalfa Seed Commission.

AWC will continue to look at research proposals and fund projects that will develop Alberta’s wheat industry. Contracts for these ten projects that AWC has recently committed funding to are currently being signed, and more information will be available about the research being done once the contracts are completed.
