Saik's Agri-Treks: Brazil's Carnaval, Sambadrome and Christ the Redeemer

by

Every year, Brazil’s Carnaval kicks off the Friday before Ash Wednesday, which signals the beginning of Lent. The celebration is impressive, involving street festivals, masquerades and parades across the country. Perhaps the most notable Carnaval celebration occurs in Rio de Janeiro, with nearly 500 000 foreign visitors alone.

The Carnaval is a celebration that involves all walks of life, ignoring cultural and sexual identity, social roles and class differences. In fact, the poorest neighbourhoods, or favelas, are largely involved in Carnaval, often as members of samba schools (associations that represent a particular neighbourhood in the annual Samba Parade).

This year, Rob Saik, host of Agri-Treks and founder of Agri-Trend, was in Brazil to watch the Carnival unfold. In this video, Saik shares snippets from the journey, starting at the airport in São Paulo, moving through the city and onto Rio de Janeiro, Carnaval and a trip to the iconic statue, “Christ the Redeemer.”
