The RealAgriculture team roster expands by one later this month, as seasoned agriculture broadcaster Kelvin Heppner joins the team as field editor from his home base at Altona, Manitoba.

A well-recognized voice by farmers, Kelvin has spent the last six years as the agriculture programmer and on-air personality for Golden West Radio (mainly CFAM – Altona; AM1250 – Steinbach; CJRB – Boissevain; CFRY – Portage), where he hosted the daily “Manitoba Farm Journal” radio show, as well as western Canada’s only radio network ag feature, “The Prairie Ag Wire.”

A former farm kid who tricked employers into letting him make a living talking to farmers, ag industry leaders and anybody doing interesting things in the world of agriculture, Kelvin has an agribusiness degree from the University of Manitoba, and received the U of M’s Dr. Daryl Kraft undergraduate award for the best agricultural policy paper in 2010. Kelvin was named the Broadcasters Association of Manitoba “Broadcaster of Tomorrow” in 2011 and has been recognized for his ag reporting and writing by the Canadian Farm Writers Federation.

When he’s not busy breaking the latest ag news, Kelvin is raising a growing family near Altona, where he also farms with his dad, growing grain and running a broiler breeder chicken operation. Kelvin also enjoys playing and coaching baseball, soccer and hockey (Go Leafs, Blue Jays and Bombers!).

“Kelvin’s background, expertise and interests really round out the RealAgriculture team,” says Shaun Haney, founder of RealAgriculture. “Readers and followers of the site will benefit from Kelvin’s insight into markets, ag policy and issues that impact the farm. And I benefit because now we have another sports fan on our team.”

Kelvin begins as Manitoba field editor August 25, 2014. You can follow him on Twitter at @RealAg_Kelvin or email him at [email protected].
