Just like there are many strains of the common cold and the flu, plant diseases can be caused by “races” of the same pathogen. Northern corn leaf blight is one disease that has at least 13 strains — four to six of which affect corn crops in Ontario.
In this episode of the Agronomy Geeks podcast, Bernard Tobin ask Albert Tenuta, field crop plant pathologist for the Ontario Ministry Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, about leaf diseases in the 2014 corn crop, the impact of NCLB and if we’re seeing a steady increase in the disease.
Tenuta explains where we’re at with monitoring of the disease after 10 years of monitoring, and highlights the details of a new project in partnership with Grain Farmers of Ontario that’s working to identify which strains Ontario is typically dealing with.
