A U.S. Beef Market Forecast for 2015

There were roughly 95 million cattle in the United States as of July 1, 2014, a 3% drop from 2012 numbers, but that could turn around, according to John Navlinka of Sterling Marketing.

“I think we’re beginning to build herds and it’s going to be slow — it’s not going to be a rapid buildup like we’ve seen in past cattle cycles,” Navlinka says in the following interview. However, he predicts the result of the expansion in terms of beef production might not be evidenced until around 2017.

Canada’s in a similar situation, with cattle inventory remaining relatively stagnant, and many suggest the expansion will lag behind that in the U.S.

In this interview, filmed at the Canfax Cattle Market Forum in Calgary, Shaun Haney speaks to Navlinka about the situation in the States, how it relates to Canada and what he anticipates for the future of the beef market.
