When Mark Muench was frustrated with the strip tillage tool options available to him, he decided to work with Salford to develop a new tool that would tackle the conditions on his farm near Ogden, Iowa.
Over a decade of adjusting his soil management practices and equipment went in to getting strip tillage right on his farm, Muench says. He plants corn and corn, and as such deals with very heavy residue — strip tillage, he explains, is a way to deal with residue without giving up yield and while decreasing the risk of soil erosion or nutrient migration.
In this episode of In the Dirt filmed at last summer’s Farm Progress Show, Muench, outlines how he uses strip till on his farm, plus what tweaks and tricks he’s implemented to get the best result from strip tillage.
