How "Sustainably Raised" are Canadian Crops? We're about to find out

by

The Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Crops (CRSC) took a “giant leap forward” today with an announced $1.077 million for the CRSC’s work to establish metrics on sustainable crop production.

Gerry Ritz, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, was on hand at the Canadian Global Crops Symposium in Saskatoon today to make the funding announcement.

“Consumers are increasingly demanding more information about the characteristics of the food they eat,” says Mark Brock in a press release. Brock is the co-chair of the CRSC and a director with Grain Farmers of Ontario. “Canadian agriculture has made great strides in reducing our environmental footprint, this project will give us a consistent and scientifically reliable way to report on our sustainability with a lot of credibility.”

Carried out over three years, the ‘Crop Sustainability Metrics Platform’ will be designed to enable Canadian suppliers to respond with knowledge and authority to global marketplace demands for sustainability information and, in turn, position Canada as a recognized world leader in the sustainable production of grains, oilseeds, pulses and special crops. This project will provide a collective solution on sustainability reporting that balances value chain needs from producers to consumers

“We work directly with our suppliers to implement our vision of a sustainable supply chain, and that starts with great initiatives like the metrics platform that the CRSC is pursuing,” says Jeffrey Fitzpatrick-Stilwell, member of the CRSC Steering Committee and Senior Manager, Sustainability for McDonald’s Canada.
