National Ag in the Classroom Organization Established

A national organization focused on improving agricultural awareness in schools was formally launched on Monday, as Agriculture in the Classroom Canada held its first annual general meeting in Saskatoon.

AITC Canada will provide a forum for provincial and territorial ag literacy organizations to work together, explained Johanne Ross, chair of AITC Canada and executive director of Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba.

kids_aitc_cattle“Having an official national organization will serve many purposes; to support provincial activities, facilitate national events such as Canadian Ag Literacy Week, and bring provincial AITC organizations and partners together to have the opportunity to share resources, programs and best practices. The time is now to bring agriculture education to the national stage and AITC Canada will be in a great position to do so,” she said.

Seven provinces are represented among the inaugural members:

  • Agriculture in the Classroom Program, Ag-Industry Extension and Training Branch, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development
  • Agriculture in the Classroom – Saskatchewan
  • Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba
  • Ontario Agri-Food Education Inc.
  • Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture
  • Agriculture Sector Council Prince Edward Island
  • Newfoundland & Labrador Federation of Agriculture

The AGM coincided with AITC Canada’s first Agriculture Education Workshop taking place in Saskatoon this week. The 2016 event will be held in Nova Scotia.

Attention Manitoba high school students: Ag in the Classroom – Manitoba is looking to send two students and their teachers or mentors to the Global Youth Institute in Des Moines, Iowa this October (held concurrently with the World Food Prize and Borlaug Dialogues Symposium).
