Double Barrel Auger Doubles Down on Grain Moving Capacity

by

Drake, Saskatchewan-based manufacturer Bergen Industries is following the mantra “two is better than one” with a new farm auger setup advertised to move 600 bushels of grain per minute.

The concept and huge capacity of the “Double Barrel Auger” drew plenty of attention at the 2015 Farm Progress Show in Regina, including from the show’s innovation committee, as it won the Farm Progress Innovation Showcase gold category.

The twin 16 auger system not only moves grain in a hurry, but it also has built-in redundancy with each auger operating independently, explains general manager Al Bergen in the video below.

“The big factor is with dependability, it doesn’t matter how big the grain auger is, if something goes down, you’re shut down,” he says. “With this here, you have massive capacity and if something goes wrong at any given time, you have the opportunity to keep on going. It’s like having a second combine at harvest.”

As for feedback from farmers, Shaunti Bergen notes they often hear 600 bushels per minute is “overkill.”

“I think it’s mainly because their grain carts aren’t big enough to dump that much grain to keep it going. When that catches up, it will be worthwhile to have one of these,” she says.

Moving at that rate, the operator must be alert to avoid spilling grain, but for convenience, a cup holder is welded onto the auger’s operator stand — the joke being that the operator won’t have time for a beverage.

“Everybody thinks they have time to drink a cup of coffee, but you better be moving quick,” says Al.
