ALMA Finds Common Ground Between Dairy and Beef

by

The Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency is generally known for its work funding research and market development in the beef and pork industries, but the organization also has a vested interest in dairy.

Whether its forage production, animal welfare or meat prices, dairy has more in common with other livestock industries than most recognize, says ALMA chair Dr. David Chalack, in this interview at the Western Canadian Dairy Seminar in Red Deer earlier this month.

“Just as an example, the biggest consumption of meat these days is ground meat and hamburger, and dairy cattle represent 30 to 40 percent of ground beef,” he points out.

This livestock industry-wide approach is one of the reasons ALMA partners with the dairy seminar, notes Chalack.

“Issues that go across sectors are discussed here, for example all the animal welfare and social license topics are relevant to all sectors,” he says.
